Sub-Mariner: The Depths #1-5, Writer: Peter Milligan, Artist: Esad Ribic (2008)
The label on the tin says Sub-Mariner (Namor), but the story is essentially about a scientist exploring the deep sea, looking for Atlantis (or rather, trying to disprove its existence). This is not your usual Marvel comic, and it’s not for the weak-hearted, but I love it, because:
- Ribic was responsible for the art.
- Namor = egocentric mutant parading around in a speedo? Hahahaha, NO. This is Namor, the deep-sea creature, and it’s amazing.
- Did I mention the art?
- It’s completed in five chapters, no need for any previous knowledge.
- It’s a story about exploring the unknown (who doesn’t like that).
Essentially, however, the focus of the story is on the human mind and how it works. And the human mind is a dark, dark place. As dark as the depths they are trying to explore.
Namor, you old salt.

namor was such an ugly baby though like jesus christ what is this thing
it amazes me that something so hideous can grow into something so beautiful
Namor may have been a terrifying baby but look how precious he was as a youth.
